Local wine history

Monemvasia, an ancient Byzantine citadel imbued in legend was destined to provide its rich bounty to countless generations with abundance. So few wines, carry such an historical pedigree such as that of the renowned Monemvasios or Monemvasiotis wine; later to be renamed by the Venetian and Genoan traders of the 13 century A.D., as the Malvasia wine.

Its reputation reached far beyond the confines of the region and was to be found in the most reputable ‘salons’ of European noble Dom throughout the medieval and renaissance eras during which times, it reached its peak.

Quoted amongst many an artiste including that of Shakespeareanprose, its reputation has been carried through ancient times. The Malvasian wine  was later to be lost in the shadows of the Turkish occupation which, also gave way to the destruction of the vineyards that produced this eclectic delight.

Nonetheless, its aroma has reached our modern age where worthy local wine producers have dedicated decades to the rebirth of this ancient and reputable ‘recipe’.

Painstaking research together with time honored farming techniques aimed at its resurrection, has re- produced a most worthy reproduction of this famous local wine and allowed the Malvasia name to regain its rightful place in the modern history of Monemvasia and its heritage.
