Religious trip to Arcadia

The name “Malevi” is related to the highest peak of Mount Parnon, Malevos, where the monastery was initially buit.

In the green park of Tegea, at the area where the ancient city used to be, stands today the church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, known as Palaia Episkopi.

It is built over the koilon of the ancient theatre, which was constructed with the sponsorship of Antiochus Epiphanes, in the 2nd century BC, and its ruins can be seen under the altar of the church.

Approximately in the middle of the route from Leonidio to the village of Kosmas, is the monastery of Elona, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. It is constructed on the steep, reddish rock of Parnon, and is one of the most impressive and magnificent monuments of Arcadia. 

At a beautiful location with a panoramic view, scattered with antiquities, at the plain of Thirea, at a small distance from Astros, is the Monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ, which is called Monastery of Loukou.

There are a lot of views regarding its name, Γwith most prevalent one the one relating with the Latin word lucus, which means idyllic location, sacred grove.

Seventeen large trees sprout from the roof of a small stone temple in the Vasta area of Megalopolis. At the foundation of it, the waters of a river gush. Architects and agronomists see it as a scientifically inexplicable phenomenon that plane trees have been around for so many years and under these conditions.

This is the church of Agia Theodora which is a unique phenomenon.
